Over the past decade, outdoor digital signage has become increasingly prevalent. Often powered by electricity, it has raised questions about its benefits for businesses. However, what if these displays were solar powered? What advantages could they offer to businesses then?

Introduction of Solar Digital Signage

A solar digital signage refers to outdoor digital displays that are powered by solar energy. These signs utilize solar panels to capture sunlight and convert it into electricity, which is then used to power the digital display. This setup eliminates the need for traditional electricity sources, making solar powered signage a sustainable and environmentally friendly option for outdoor advertising and information dissemination.
Solar signage boards are acrylic box boards designed for brand advertising or as important message notice boards. These outdoor solar signs are illuminated at night in public places and are powered by solar modules.

Advantages of Solar Digital Signage

Given the necessity for illumination during nighttime hours, employing independent solar modules and built-in batteries offers several advantages:
1. With commercial electricity rates soaring, harnessing free solar energy presents a significant advantage.
2. The process of laying cables by digging into the ground in public spaces requires special permissions and likely licenses from local authorities.
3. The expenses associated with laying cables and their ongoing maintenance significantly contribute to the operational costs of signage board advertisement projects.
4. Conventional commercial electricity often originates from environmentally harmful sources such as fossil fuel combustion, exacerbating planetary pollution and threatening habitability.
5. Solar modules provide a self-sustaining power source, reducing reliance on grid electricity and lowering operational costs.
6. By utilizing solar energy, businesses can save on electricity bills and maintenance costs associated with traditional lighting methods.
7. Built-in batteries ensure continuous operation even during periods of low sunlight or inclement weather, ensuring reliable illumination when needed.
8. Solar-powered signage can be installed in remote locations or areas without access to electricity, expanding advertising or information dissemination opportunities to diverse environments.
Incorporating independent solar modules and inbuilt batteries into solar signage boards enhances their functionality, reliability, and sustainability, making them an effective choice for outdoor advertising and messaging needs.

Electrical Design Buildup

Four 1W power LEDs were chosen to operate in parallel, powered by a 3.7-volt Lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 2300 mAh (Model number 18650). To charge the battery, 1A Lithium chargers with protection circuits were utilized, drawing power from solar modules rated at 6V and 450 mA or higher.
The advantage of employing these 1A chargers lies in their compatibility with conventional mobile chargers featuring micro USB connector outputs, offering convenient charging options.
A battery compartment, readily available in the market, housed the battery securely. Additionally, LED optics and lenses were selectively incorporated as needed for optimal illumination in specific scenarios.
The solar module was connected to the input of the Lithium charger, with the output connected to the battery. The LED load was then drawn from the output end. Notably, in the case of Lithium chargers with protection circuits, the two outputs are isolated separately for enhanced safety and efficiency.

Why Is Outdoor Digital Signage Important?

Outdoor digital signage plays a crucial role in enhancing the visibility of companies, brands, products, services, and events. Positioned in public areas with ample space, it offers a prime opportunity to significantly increase awareness among a large audience in a visually striking manner. Typically larger than indoor signage, outdoor digital displays are designed to be viewed from considerable distances. Digital billboards stand as a prominent example of this trend, experiencing a remarkable surge in popularity over the past decade.
As one kind of outdoor digital signage, solar powered business signs become more and more inportant for business. While outdoor and indoor digital signage share several similarities, a critical consideration for outdoor installations is their need for weatherproofing and durability. Unlike indoor signage, outdoor displays must withstand various environmental conditions and remain operational for extended periods, potentially spanning months or even years, depending on usage and location. Therefore, ensuring weather resistance and robust construction are paramount for outdoor digital signage installations.

8 Examples of Outdoor Digital Signage

Outdoor Mall Digital Directories
Outdoor malls and lifestyle centers utilize digital directories, which are often interactive, to display comprehensive lists of stores, restaurants, and services within their premises. These digital directories prove invaluable for first-time visitors, facilitating easy navigation and saving time by enabling guests to quickly locate their desired destinations.
Bus Stop Digital Signage
Bus stop digital signage serves as a platform for showcasing bus schedules, local area details, maps, and advertisements. This outdoor signage proves invaluable for passengers, particularly first-time visitors, as it assists them in confirming their bus routes and identifying the appropriate stops for disembarkation.
Digital Billboards
Rapidly overtaking traditional billboards, digital billboards offer comparable functionality with enhanced utility and flexibility. Similar to their traditional counterparts, they showcase advertisements, but with the added advantage of automatically cycling through a timed display of multiple advertisements. This feature significantly expands the advertising space available on a single billboard and enables greater customization for organizations purchasing advertising space.
Public Transit Stations
Digital signage is employed to aid passengers in their travels at train stations, airports, and subway stations. These displays commonly showcase train schedules and offer real-time updates regarding any delays or disruptions along the route.
Theme Parks
Theme parks leverage digital signage for various purposes, including wayfinding, information dissemination, and communication of important updates, including emergency information. These displays are strategically placed throughout the park to assist guests in navigating through the attractions, locating rides, and accessing pertinent information.
Stadiums And Outdoor Event Centers
Stadiums and outdoor event centers harness digital signage to offer comprehensive or close-up coverage of sporting events or concerts. Resembling television displays, these venues utilize digital screens to provide additional views, ensuring that all audience members have clear visibility of the ongoing action, regardless of their seating positions.
Restaurants
The impact of COVID-19 has prompted restaurants to explore innovative strategies to maintain profitability. A notable trend has been the integration of outdoor digital signage to facilitate contactless ordering and pickup processes. These interactive kiosks enable guests to check in for reservations, request seating, or place food orders without physical contact. Furthermore, these kiosks can showcase the full menu, providing guests with ample time to make informed selections at their convenience.
Retail
Retailers utilize digital signage displays to showcase their products and brands, as well as special sales and promotions.
As you can see, outdoor digital signage offers versatile solutions, serving as effective wayfinding tools, enhancing brand visibility, and disseminating crucial information to the public. Renowned for their durability and reliability, these displays represent invaluable assets for a wide array of organizations, spanning transportation hubs, theme parks, and various other industries.
The technology continues to evolve, outdoor solar powered digital signage is poised to play an increasingly integral role in shaping the future of navigation for business. For further information about, please contact EKAA!!!
