Window-Facing vs Outdoor Digital Signage: Which One Do You Actually Need?

Short answer: If the screen will sit behind glass, inside the building, you need a window-facing display. If it will sit in the weather — on a wall, a pole, a drive-thru lane, a bus stop — you need an outdoor display. They solve different problems: the window display fights sunlight and heat but never sees rain; the outdoor display fights sunlight, heat, rain, dust, impact and temperature swings all at once. Buying the wrong one costs you either a dead screen (an indoor unit outdoors) or a large, heavy, expensive unit doing a job a lighter one could do (an outdoor unit in a window). Here is how to tell them apart.

The one question that decides it

Is there glass between the screen and the sky?

  • Yes, the screen is inside, facing out through the window → window-facing display.
  • No, the screen is exposed, or under a canopy that still lets rain and wind reach it → outdoor display.

Everything else — brightness, enclosure, weight, price — follows from that answer. A few edge cases are covered at the end.

What they have in common

Both are high-brightness LCDs built to be read against daylight, both run long hours, and both generate a lot more heat than an ordinary commercial screen. In both cases the questions to ask a vendor are the same: rated brightness of the complete unit, whether auto-dimming is standard, and how heat gets out — fans and filters, or a fanless sealed design with nothing to clog.

Where they differ

1. Brightness

Window displays are sold in brightness tiers because the window's orientation decides what is needed: around 1,500 cd/m² for a shaded or north-facing window, 3,000 for partial sun, 4,000 for direct sun. The glass in front of the display and the building around it take some of the load.

Outdoor displays have no such help. They face the open sky, so they sit at the top of the range — typically 4,000–5,000 cd/m² — as standard.

2. Weather protection

A window display needs none. It lives at room temperature and humidity, behind glass. Its housing is designed for heat, not water.

An outdoor display must be sealed against rain from every direction, dust, and pressure-washing, which is what an IP65 or IP67 rating certifies — and the rating should apply to the whole unit including the cable entry, not just the housing. It also needs a wider operating temperature range, because it will see frost and full summer sun in the same year.

3. Impact and vandalism

A shop window is already a barrier; the display behind it does not need to be hit-proof. An outdoor display in a public space does: look for an IK rating (IK10 is the top grade) on the front glass.

4. Weight, mounting and installation

A window display is a slim indoor unit. It is hung from the ceiling in the window bay or placed on a floor stand — a shopfitting job, with power and data routed inside the building.

An outdoor display is a sealed steel or aluminium enclosure with a thick front glass. A 55" unit with its mount can weigh 60–90 kg and needs a wind-load-rated fixing on a wall, a pole or a concrete base, plus outdoor-rated cabling. It is a construction job, often with a licensed electrician and, in many places, an outdoor advertising permit.

5. Single- and double-sided use

Window displays are often double-sided, with one face to the street and one to the shop — the same unit serves passers-by and customers inside.

Outdoor displays can also be double-sided (a pole-mounted totem seen from both directions), but the second face is another exposed, sealed screen rather than an indoor one, so the unit is correspondingly larger and heavier.

6. Price and cost of ownership

For the same size, an outdoor display costs more to buy — the sealed enclosure, the glass, the thermal design and the certifications are all extra engineering — and more to install. A window display is the cheaper way to reach the street if you have a window to put it in.

Running costs are similar in kind: power (auto-dimming matters for both), content, and maintenance. On both, a fanless design and modules that can be swapped on site keep the year-two and year-three numbers down.

Edge cases

  • The window has heavy tinting or solar film. Tinted glass cuts the display's brightness as seen from outside. Go up one brightness tier, or ask the vendor to test a sample in your window before you order.
  • An open shopfront with no glass (market stalls, some restaurants, garage doors that roll up). This is outdoors as far as the display is concerned, even though it feels like inside. Use an outdoor unit or accept a short life.
  • A covered walkway or arcade. If rain, dust and street temperatures reach the screen, it is outdoor. If it is genuinely enclosed and climate-controlled, a window-facing or high-brightness indoor unit will do.
  • A screen that faces a window from deep inside the shop. The further from the glass, the less daylight lands on the screen; a lower brightness tier may be enough. Measure before you buy.
  • You want the screen outside the window, on the façade. Outdoor — and check local rules on projecting signs.
