Outdoor Digital Signage Buyer’s Checklist: 12 Questions to Ask Before You Sign

Short answer: Before buying outdoor digital signage, confirm twelve things: sun exposure and viewing distance at the site, rated brightness and auto-dimming, whole-unit IP rating, cooling method, operating temperature range, front-glass coating, impact rating and full bonding, power and data routing, mounting and wind load, local compliance, content/CMS compatibility, modular serviceability, and what the display will cost you in years two and three. The list below explains why each matters and gives the exact question to ask.

Print this, take it to the site, and send it to every vendor you shortlist. If a vendor can't answer a question with a number, that is the answer.

Part A — The site (answer these yourself first)

1. Which direction does the screen face, and for how many hours is it in direct sun?
Why: Sun exposure sets the brightness you need and the heat the enclosure must shed. A south- or west-facing screen in Osaka, Los Angeles or Riyadh is a different product from a north-facing one under a canopy.
How: Stand at the mounting point at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Note sun angle and whether anything shades it.

2. What is the viewing distance and content type?
Why: Distance sets screen size and resolution; content sets brightness and refresh needs. A drive-thru menu read from 2–3 m needs legible 12–14 mm text on a 55" screen; a car-park wayfinding screen read from 15 m needs a bigger screen with less detail, not more pixels.
How: Measure the closest and farthest realistic viewing points.

3. What are the extreme temperatures and weather at the site?
Why: Every outdoor display has a rated operating range. Ask for the range of the complete unit, not just the panel, and check that it covers both your winter low and your summer high with margin.
How: Use the local 10-year record high and low. A sun-facing screen runs hotter than the air around it, so leave headroom above the record high.

4. How will power and data reach the screen?
Why: The cheapest screen becomes the most expensive project if it needs a new trench. Decide early: mains power + Wi-Fi/4G, or PoE, or a fully off-grid solar unit.
How: Walk the cable route with the electrician before choosing the product.

Part B — The display

5. What is the rated brightness, and is auto-dimming included?
Why: Brightness has to match the site (see Q1). Auto-dimming via an ambient-light sensor extends backlight life, cuts power at night, and keeps the screen legal and neighbour-friendly after dark.
Ask: "Rated brightness in nits? Ambient-light sensor standard or optional, and is the dimming curve adjustable?"
Reference: 4,000–5,000 nits for direct sun; 2,500–3,500 for shaded or hooded positions.

6. Is the IP rating for the complete assembled unit?
Why: IP67 on the enclosure means little if the cable gland or media-player bay is IP54. IP67 (dust-tight, temporary immersion) also implies no vents — which is what keeps humid air and salt spray out year after year.
Ask: "IP rating of the whole unit including cable entry — and can I see the test report?"

7. How is heat removed — fans and filters, or a sealed conductive design?
Why: Fans and filters are the most common field failure in outdoor signage. A sealed fanless design has no consumables, but must be engineered correctly.
Ask: "Any air exchange with the outside? If so, filter service interval and who performs it?"

8. What is the front glass — AR-coated or AG — what IK rating, and is full optical bonding standard?
Why: Tempered glass with an AR (anti-reflective) coating cancels reflections without touching the image; an AF (anti-fingerprint) layer keeps it clean. AG (anti-glare) glass is an etched, matte surface: it softens reflections by scattering light, but that scattering also lowers the effective brightness of the screen — the wrong trade for a sun-facing display. The IK code (IEC 62262) rates impact resistance; IK10 is the top of the scale and the level to ask for wherever the public can reach the screen. Full optical bonding fills the gap between glass and panel: it removes internal reflection, raises sunlight contrast, stops condensation from forming behind the glass, and protects the panel against black-screen failure and burn-in. Some vendors offer it only as an option on certain sizes.
Ask: "Coating — AR/AF or AG? IK rating tested? Is full bonding standard on this size?"

Part C — Installation and compliance

9. What is the mounting method and wind-load rating?
Why: A 55" outdoor unit weighs 60–90 kg and has the wind profile of a sail. The mount, the wall or pole, and the anchor bolts all need to be rated — and the vendor should provide the drawing.
Ask: "Wind-load rating (Pa or km/h), mounting drawing, and weight with mount."

10. What certifications does the unit carry for my market?
Why: Every market has its own electrical-safety and EMC certification scheme (CE in Europe, FCC in the U.S., and so on), plus RoHS. Missing certification can stop a project at customs or at the electrical inspection.
Ask: "Certificates for [your market], with test-lab reports."

11. Does it work with the content system you already use?
Why: An outdoor screen is a display; the content management system (CMS) decides how easy it is to change a menu at 6 a.m. Confirm the media player runs your CMS, or that the vendor's CMS meets your needs.
Ask: "Supported media players / OS, and which CMS platforms have you deployed with?"

Part D — Life after installation

12. Is it built to be serviced as modules, and what will it cost you in years two and three?
Why: The purchase price is only part of what an outdoor display costs. From the second year on, the bills are installation follow-ups, power, content, and service — and service is where designs diverge. A display whose power supply, media player and control board are separate plug-in modules can be brought back in minutes without leaving the wall; one that is not has to be dismounted and shipped. That difference, multiplied over years two and three and every screen you own, is what decides whether the "cheap" unit stayed cheap.
Ask: "Are the power supply, media player and control electronics separate modules that can be swapped in place without dismounting the display?"
