Short answer: A drive-thru digital menu board is not simply an "outdoor version" of an in-store screen. It takes the afternoon sun head-on, sits in rain and wind, gets hit by headlights, runs late into the night, and when it fails the lane stops taking orders — it is the harshest place a display can work in a restaurant. Eight things decide whether it survives: brightness and auto-dimming, what the IP rating really covers, how it is cooled, viewing distance and mounting height, the front glass and bonding, regulations and certification, modular construction, and what it costs in years two and three. Here they are in order.
1. Brightness: the rated figure, and auto-dimming at night
Outdoor display brightness is quoted in cd/m² (nits). A drive-thru menu board usually faces the lane and takes the afternoon sun at an angle. Under those conditions 4,000–5,000 cd/m² is the working range; below 3,000 cd/m² the prices become unreadable between 2 and 4 p.m. in midsummer. Under a canopy or in a shaded lane, 2,500–3,500 cd/m² can be enough.
Just as important as the rated brightness is auto-dimming. A board still running 5,000 cd/m² at midnight is blinding to drivers, a common source of neighbour complaints, and hard on both backlight life and the power bill. Confirm whether an ambient-light sensor that lowers brightness automatically and restores it in the morning is standard or optional.
Ask the vendor: "What is the rated brightness of the outdoor model? Is auto-dimming by ambient-light sensor standard? Can the dimming curve be adjusted for our site?"
2. IP rating: how much of the unit is actually IP67
IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets; IP67 means dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion. A menu board will never be submerged, but reaching IP67 requires eliminating vents and fully sealing the cable entry and gaskets — which is exactly what makes a unit structurally resistant to typhoon-driven rain, rainy-season condensation cycles, and pressure-washer cleaning.
The other thing to confirm is what the rating applies to. On some products the enclosure is IP67 but the cable entry or media-player bay is rated lower.
Ask the vendor: "Is the IP rating for the complete assembled unit including cable entry? Can you provide the test report?"
3. Cooling: fans and filters are consumables
Outdoor displays are cooled one of two ways.
Fan-cooled units pull outside air through a filter and blow it across the panel and boards. They are cheaper to build and reach high brightness easily, but filters clog with pollen, dust and exhaust, and fans stop with age. The moment airflow drops, the panel overheats — in the hottest week of the year. A drive-thru lane is one of the dustiest, most exhaust-laden places you can put a screen.
Fanless sealed units never exchange air with the outside; the aluminium enclosure itself acts as the heat sink and heat leaves by conduction. Nothing to clog, nothing to spin — but the thermal path has to be engineered correctly from the start.
Ask the vendor: "Is there any air exchange between the inside and outside of the enclosure? If so, what is the filter replacement interval and who performs it?"
4. Viewing distance and size: text a driver can read from the car
At the order point, the driver's seat is typically 2–3 m from the board. To make prices and item names reliably legible at that distance, use 12–14 mm minimum text height on a 55" screen. If the menu is long, two or three 55" screens side by side (pre-sell, menu, promotion) beat one crowded screen for both legibility and update flexibility.
At this distance Full HD (1920×1080) is sufficient. 4K adds cost without benefit and narrows the choice of outdoor panels.
5. Mounting height and angle
Height: Using the driver's eye point as reference (about 1.1–1.2 m in a passenger car, 1.4–1.6 m in an SUV or minivan), a screen centre at roughly 1.3–1.5 m is typical.
Angle: Turning the screen 5–10° toward the vehicle, to match the lane's approach angle, lengthens the time the driver sees it straight on.
Load: A 55" outdoor unit with mount weighs 60–90 kg and catches wind like a sail. Confirm the wind-load rating of the mount, wall or pole and anchors, and ask the vendor for the mounting drawing.
6. Front glass: AR + AF or AG, impact rating, and full bonding
The front glass is what people touch, what gets hit, and what reflects the sky. Three things to check.
Coating type — where vendors differ most. AR (anti-reflective) is a thin-film coating that cancels reflections without affecting the image. AF (anti-fingerprint) is an oleophobic layer that keeps the surface clean. AG (anti-glare) is different: an etched or matte surface that softens reflections by diffusing light — but that diffusion also scatters the backlight, so the screen ends up dimmer than the panel behind it. In a sun-facing drive-thru lane, that is a poor trade.
Impact resistance. The IK code (IEC 62262) rates how much impact energy the glass and enclosure withstand. IK10, the top grade, is 20 joules — roughly a 5 kg mass dropped from 40 cm — and is the level to specify wherever the public can reach the screen.
Full optical bonding. With an air gap between glass and panel there are two extra reflecting surfaces in front of the image, and condensation forms in the gap. Full bonding fills that gap with optical adhesive so glass and panel become one piece: internal reflection drops, daytime contrast rises, condensation cannot form behind the glass, and the panel is protected against blackout and burn-in. Some vendors offer it only as an option on certain sizes, so confirm it is standard on the size you are buying.
Ask the vendor: "Is the front glass AR-coated or AG (matte)? What IK rating has it been tested to? Is full bonding standard on this size, or an option?"
7. Regulations and certification: electrical safety, outdoor advertising rules, electrical work
An outdoor display is both an electrical product and an outdoor advertisement. Three things to confirm.
Electrical-safety and EMC certification: Every market has its own scheme (CE in Europe, FCC in the U.S., and so on). Together with RoHS, confirm at the selection stage which certifications and test reports your market requires — a missing certificate stops a project at customs or at the electrical inspection.
Outdoor advertising rules: Signage visible from a public road is regulated in many countries and municipalities. Display area, mounting height, brightness and flashing may all be restricted; check with the relevant authority before finalising the design.
Electrical work: Installation must be done by a licensed electrical contractor. Confirm the cable route, distribution-board capacity and earth-leakage protection in parallel with product selection.
Ask the vendor: "Can you provide the certifications and test reports required for our market?"
8. Modular construction, and the cost in years two and three
Sooner or later the media player or power supply will fail. The question is whether the unit is designed so that the failed part can be swapped as a module on site, or whether the whole display has to come off the wall and be shipped back. Check for front or side service access without dismounting, and whether the power supply, media player and control board are each independent plug-in modules.
The purchase price is only part of what an outdoor display costs. From the second year on, the bills are post-installation adjustments, power, content operation, and maintenance. Periodic fan and filter replacement and ship-back repairs are the costs that "cheap" hardware presents later. The difference a modular design makes accumulates over years two and three and across every unit you own — and decides whether the cheap unit really was cheap.
Ask the vendor: "Are the power supply, media player and control board independent modules? Can they be swapped in place without removing the display from its mount?"
