Short answer: Most outdoor LCD displays look identical on a spec sheet — "high brightness", "weatherproof", "commercial grade". The differences that decide whether a screen is still working in year four are in five places: how heat leaves the enclosure, what the IP rating actually covers, how brightness is controlled over the day, what the front glass is made of and how it is attached to the panel, and how the unit is built to be serviced. This article walks through each one, says what EKAA does, and tells you what to ask any vendor — including us.
1. Cooling design: fanless sealed vs. fan-cooled
This is the single biggest design fork in outdoor signage.
Fan-cooled displays pull outside air through filters and push it across the panel and electronics. They are cheaper to build and can reach very high brightness, but every fan, filter and vent is a maintenance item and a point of failure. Filters clog with dust and pollen, fans wear out, and once airflow drops the panel overheats — usually in the hottest week of the year.
Fanless sealed displays move heat by conduction through the enclosure (typically an aluminium chassis acting as a heat sink) with no air exchange between the inside and outside. There is nothing to clog and nothing that spins. The trade-off is that the engineering has to be right from the start: the thermal path from panel to enclosure has to be designed, not bolted on.
What EKAA does: Every EKAA outdoor display is fanless and fully sealed. We chose this route from the start because our earliest customers were in coastal Asia and the Middle East, where fans and filters fail fastest.
What to ask any vendor: "Is there any air exchange between the inside of the enclosure and outside air? If yes, what is the filter service interval, and who does it?"
2. IP rating: what the number covers
IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets. IP67 means dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion (30 minutes at 1 metre). For a display that will never be submerged, why does IP67 matter?
Because IP67 is a proxy for how the enclosure is built. Passing immersion testing requires continuous gaskets, sealed cable glands, and no vents — which is exactly what protects a screen against wind-driven rain, condensation cycles, salt air and pressure-washing. An IP65 unit with vents can pass a hose test and still take on moisture over a humid summer.
The second question is what is rated. Some vendors rate the enclosure only; the panel cavity, the media player bay or the cable entry may be lower.
What EKAA does: The complete unit — enclosure, panel cavity, cable entry — is IP67, with no vents by design (see point 1).
What to ask any vendor: "Is the IP rating for the whole assembled unit including cable entry, or for the enclosure only? Can you share the test report?"
3. Brightness: peak number vs. usable brightness
Brightness (nits, or cd/m²) is the number everyone compares, and it is the least useful one in isolation.
- Direct sunlight, screen facing the sun for part of the day: 4,000–5,000 nits is the working range. Below ~3,000 nits the content washes out at midday.
- Shaded outdoor / under canopy / drive-thru with a hood: 2,500–3,500 nits is usually enough.
What matters more than the peak figure is auto-dimming. A screen running 5,000 nits at 2 a.m. wastes power, shortens backlight life and annoys neighbours; an ambient-light sensor should bring it down automatically and bring it back up at dawn. Check whether the sensor is standard or an optional extra, and whether the dimming curve can be adjusted for your site.
What EKAA does: Outdoor models are rated 4,000–5,000 nits, with ambient-light auto-dimming as standard.
What to ask any vendor: "What is the rated brightness, and is ambient-light auto-dimming included or optional?"
4. Front glass: AR + AF vs. AG, impact rating, and full optical bonding
The glass is what people touch, what vandals hit and what reflects the sky. Three things to check:
- Coating type — this is where vendors differ most. AR (anti-reflective) is a thin-film coating that cancels reflections without touching the image; AF (anti-fingerprint) is an oleophobic layer that keeps the surface clean. AG (anti-glare) is different: it is an etched or matte surface that softens reflections by diffusing light — but that same diffusion scatters the backlight, so an AG screen delivers less effective brightness than the panel behind it can produce. On a sun-facing outdoor screen, that is the wrong trade.
- Impact resistance. The IK code (IEC 62262) rates how much impact energy the glass and enclosure survive. IK10 is the top of the scale — 20 joules, roughly a 5 kg mass dropped from 40 cm — and is the level to ask for on any screen the public can reach.
- Full optical bonding vs. air gap. With an air gap, there are two extra reflecting surfaces between the viewer and the image, and a cavity where condensation can form. Full optical bonding fills that gap with optical adhesive so the glass and panel become one piece: internal reflection drops, contrast in sunlight rises, condensation cannot form between glass and panel, and the panel is protected against black-screen failure and burn-in. Many vendors offer bonding only as an option on selected sizes; check whether it is standard on the size you are buying.
What EKAA does: Tempered glass with AR + AF coating across the outdoor range, tested to IK10. We deliberately do not use AG glass on outdoor models, because it lowers the brightness the customer paid for. Full optical bonding is standard on every size of EKAA outdoor display, not an option.
What to ask any vendor: "Is the front glass AR-coated or AG (matte)? What IK rating has it been tested to? Is full optical bonding standard on this size, or an extra?"
5. Serviceability: designed to swap, not to repair
Outdoor displays fail eventually — a media player, a power supply, occasionally a panel. The question is whether the unit was designed so that a failed part can be swapped as a module, or whether the whole display has to come off the wall and go back on a truck.
Look for: front or side service access without removing the unit from its mount; power supply, media player and control electronics as separate plug-in modules; standard mounting interfaces (VESA or a documented bolt pattern).
What EKAA does: EKAA outdoor displays are built modular: power supply, media player and control board are independent units designed to be replaced, not repaired, without removing the display from its mount.
What to ask any vendor: "If the media player or power supply fails, is it a plug-in module that can be swapped in place?"

Who this is for, and who it is not for
EKAA's design choices favour sites where maintenance visits are expensive or rare: drive-thru lanes, transit, parks, petrol stations, coastal and desert climates. If you are deploying a small number of screens in a mild, shaded, easily accessible location and the lowest purchase price is the deciding factor, a fan-cooled unit may serve you fine — and we will tell you so.
